SCA APPROVED AND SUPPORTED HARD DRIVES
Any student purchased drive must meet the requirements below.
The following is the list of SCA approved and supported hard drives.

Each drive listed meets our minimal hardware requirements. Those requirements include but are not limited to:
1. Triple interface with at least USB 2.0, IEEE 1394b and eSATA.
2. The disc speed must be at least 7200rpm
3. Low failure rate
4. NO BUS POWERED DEVICES
5. NO DEVICES WITH INTERNAL APPLICATIONS (i.e. SmartWare)
FAQʼs1) What is bus power and why is it insufficient for editing?
Bus powered external drives draw their power from either the USB or FireWire ports on a
computer and is not stable enough to reliably prevent data corruption and or loss while
editing multimedia projects.2) What is IEEE 1394b?
This is better known as FireWire. The “b” at the end means FireWire800.3) Which is better for editing, USB or FireWire?
USB is usually “good enough” for multimedia editing, but it is far from optimal. In some
cases editing via a USB drive will cause footage to stutter or playback poorly, particularly
with higher quality footage (AMA, DNxHD115 +). FireWire800 is the highest speed port that
we can offer on our machines, it is suggested that you use FW800 if at all possible.
However, do not use FW400 to FW800 adapters, this causes some data slow down that can
wreak havoc on media playback.4) What does 7200rpm mean and why canʼt I use a 5400rpm drive?
7200rpm, refers to the disk speed in “rotations per minute”. The most common disk speed
you will see is 5400rpm, however it is not suitable for editing because it does not have the
sustained read/write speeds you need for multimedia.
